What is MFA?
Despite our best efforts to keep our applications and services secure, passwords can be compromised. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds another layer of protection by also requiring a temporary generated token from a mobile app.
How to enroll in Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication
- When MFA is enabled, you will be signed out of all your devices. Go to web Outlook https://outlook.office.com and sign in.
- After entering your password, you will see the following message, "More Information Required". Press Next to proceed.
- In Step 1, select the drop down and pick "Mobile app".
- Select "Use verification code" option.
- Click the blue, "Set up", button.
- Next you'll see instructions on downloading and installing the mobile app. Please download Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone and continue.
- Once you see the message "Mobile app has been configured for notifications and verification codes" Click next.
- Open your mobile Microsoft Authenticator app. The app will display a six digit code. This code refreshes every 30 seconds. Enter your displayed code and click Verify.
- You will be asked to enter in a phone number as a backup. Select your country code in the drop down
- Enter your mobile number, and hit next.
- An "App Password" is generated. Some applications like Outlook desktop need this "app password" for authentication. Please copy this password for logging into your desktop Outlook client.
- Hit "Done" and your are all set!
When you sign-in from another workstation or web Outlook you will be prompted to enter the temporary code from your mobile app along with your password. For desktop Outlook please enter the "app password" generated during MFA enrollment.
